Summerfield Homes purchases land for 9 family homes in Horton, Somerset

Summerfield Homes has purchased the land of a former garage in the village of Horton where it has permission to build nine detached family homes.

The Somerset based housebuilder is delivering a mix of three, four and five bedroom detached homes on the outskirts of the Horton located off Shave Lane.

Before construction can begin, the former garage and outbuildings will be demolished making way for a new access road and the nine homes, which have been individually designed, adopting a contemporary specification inside and out.

Enjoying views of open countryside, the site will retain East and South hedgerows and trees with additional planting, bird and bat boxes to encourage nature to thrive in the rural setting.

Each new home will benefit from the latest energy-efficient features incorporating a renewable energy source, shower saves and further thermally efficient external elements. The development has been carefully planned to ensure each property takes advantage of the maximum amount of natural sunlight and ventilation.

The popular village of Horton benefits from a rural setting but is coupled with excellent travel routes, being accessible to major A roads including the A303 and A358 as well as being approximately 11 miles from Junction 25 of the M5 motorway.

Commenting on the completion of this new site purchase, Jamie Johnson, Development Manager at Summerfield Homes, said: “We are pleased to have successfully completed the purchase of the land at Horton, off Shave Lane. This development presents the opportunity for Summerfield Homes to deliver nine contemporary new homes all built to an excellent specification.

“We understand the importance of providing highly energy efficient properties, that are not only kind to the environment but also benefit from being constructed with quality materials ensuring we provide an excellent place for customers to live for years to come.”

KFC Drive-Thru Taking Shape on at Westpark 26, Wellington

A new KFC Drive-Thru for Somerset which is due to open early next year is taking shape at Westpark 26 near Wellington where the steel frame for the single storey building is now clearly visible.

Following planning approval for the drive-thru restaurant, builders Devon Contractors have completed the foundations and most of the ground works on the last plot available along the A38 boundary of the popular, 40-acre business park.

As well as the restaurant, the site will have parking for 32 vehicles and thanks to an arrangement with sustainable energy company GRIDSERVE, there will be 12 EV charging points.

When complete, the KFC drive-thru will be an additional amenity for occupiers on the park as well as visitors and add a further 30 jobs to more than 1,000 that have been created already in sectors ranging from healthcare and hospitality, to distribution and manufacturing.

Ben Trickey, Commercial Director at Summerfield Commercial, said: “It is always exciting to see a building coming out of the ground when it has only been on paper before. We are pleased to welcome KFC as a great addition to the park and also delighted to be able to offer charging facilities to the drivers of electric vehicles.

Sun Shines on Boules Tournament raising £3,000 for Somerset Charities

Summerfield welcomed 40 businesses from across the south west to its annual boules tournament at Taunton Deane Cricket Club in aid of its Summerfield Force for Good Fund.

Now in its 12th year, the tournament is an opportunity for guests to play the popular and easily learned sport of boules, similar to lawn bowls, to network and to contribute to a charitable fund which this year is supporting the Somerset Community Foundation.

Around 170 people converged on the cricket club, where Summerfield is a sponsor, armed with their boules sets and ready for a bit of friendly competition in the knock out tournament. The finals saw teams from Ashfords LLP, Wilkie May & Tuckwood, Clarke Wilmott and Moore Scarrott playing for their place, with ‘Ashfords Rollers’ winning The Cup competition and Clarke Willmott winning The Plate competition.

There was also a prize for the best fancy dress which went to Stantec UK’s ‘Incredibowls’ team, with the wooden spoon being taken by the ‘The Meekies’ from Angus Meek and ‘The Chamber Pots’ team from Taunton Chamber of Commerce just missing out on the spoon for last place.

The event raised £2,500 from the businesses participating, which Summerfield topped up to make a total donation of £3,000 to its Force for Good Fund, administered by the Somerset Community Foundation.

Commenting on the day, James Holyday, Managing Director for Summerfield said: “Yet again we are grateful to our clients, suppliers and colleagues who made the day possible and all those who joined us in the sunshine this year. We know how much the teams look forward to our annual boules competition. Not only is it a good opportunity to network in a relaxed and fun environment, but we are also able to raise funds for such a good cause with our Summerfield Force For Good Fund.”

Since it was founded in 2002, Somerset Community Foundation has awarded more than £20m in grants to charities, community groups and social enterprises that have changed the lives of thousands in the county. The charity provides around £5 million of funding for a wide range of local causes every year in partnership with valued supporters like Summerfield.

Fiona Foster from Somerset Community Foundation said: “We’re extremely grateful to Summerfield and their guests, because we know the difference fundraising events such as this boules competition can make in our local communities. It‘s a great opportunity to have some fun, meet others and to be able to highlight the important work we do in partnership with Summerfield. I’m really looking forward to returning next year to share some stories from some of the passionate groups we’ve been able to support through our grant-making, and about the difference the generous donations have made to individual lives across the county. And to see if I am able to progress a little further with my boules ability!”

Summerfield and Tauntfield Celebrate 200 Years as a Family Business

Summerfield, the Taunton based property development company and Tauntfield, the founding family business, previously Stansell Builders, has marked a special anniversary with events for partners, suppliers and employees in a year when it is joined by the eighth generation of its founding family.

Summerfield grew out of a business started 200 years ago by William Stansell who moved to Taunton from London offering his services as a painter, plumber and glazier – 14 years before Queen Victoria began her reign.

In the years since, the company has left its mark across Somerset and the South West, working on many famous buildings and more recently creating new communities and business parks in key locations.

William’s son Alfred inherited his father’s skill as a heraldic painter and gilder with one of the gold vanes on the tower of St Mary’s Minster, Taunton still bearing his name. Running the business from his home in Billet Street, Alfred’s son William lived above its showroom and offices. He took an interest in lighting and Taunton was the first town in England to benefit from electric street lighting.

Charles Stansell took over the company around the time of his father William’s death and concentrated more on building and joinery. After World War II, Stansell worked with the local authority on some the area’s first council houses. Known as ‘young governor’, William (Bill) Stansell moved the growing business into its current offices at Tauntfield and as chairman oversaw its restructure. In 1987 Summerfield Developments was founded. His daughters Elizabeth and Julia joined the holding company Board with Julia’s son James Holyday starting at Stansell in 1992 and grandson, Chris, joining Summerfield in 2023 as the eighth generation.

Stansell Builders and the name was sold in 1996, but the business based at Tauntfield that has been developing property throughout the South West for generations, is operating with two distinct divisions of the Summerfield Developments limited company; building residential property with Summerfield Homes, and building and managing workplaces with Summerfield Commercial across the region. Residential projects have included Killams Park, Taunton; Blackdown Meadows, Wellington and Liddymore Park, Watchet. Commercial schemes include Blackbrook, Taunton; Vantage Point, Exeter and Westpark 26, Wellington.

James Holyday, Managing Director at Summerfield said: “I am delighted to be able to share this remarkable and special milestone in our company’s history with over 170 people who work with us and support us now, as we remember with gratitude and pride all the amazing hard work of previous generations of the family.

Summerfield Signs The Armed Forces Covenant

Summerfield Developments (SW) Ltd. has become the latest South West business to sign the Armed Forces Covenant on the eve of the annual Reserves Day, the 23 June, as part of its wider commitment to support colleagues and its community.

The Covenant is a promise that ensures all who serve, or have served, in the Armed Forces are treated fairly. Businesses and organisations of any size or sector can pledge their support for veterans, reservists, cadets and the wider Armed Forces community.

James Holyday, Managing Director of Summerfield Developments (SW) Ltd said: “As a business we are proud that one of our colleagues is an armed forces reservist and another has previously served in the armed forces. It made perfect sense to formally acknowledge the value the services bring to the country and society by signing the Armed Forces Covenant.

“Our commitments as property development company are wide ranging, which aim to shine a light on the importance and respect to all those who serve and have served in the forces. The benefits of employing those from a military background with their skills should not be under estimated.”

Jon Beake, Regional Employment Engagement Director for the Wessex Reserve Forces’ and Cadets’ Association commented: “Summerfield has a rich history of supporting the community and I am delighted that this support has extended to the Armed Forces.

“Their engagement throughout has been first class, identifying valued and tangible commitments that Summerfield can deliver over the coming months and years. I would encourage all business to get in contact, emulating Summerfield in publicly championing the value of the Armed Forces and their families.”
